Does your client qualify for services through the Department of Veteran Affairs?
You have dedicated your life to helping those in need and ensuring the people you care for recieve the best care possible. Your Veteran clients, their spouses, and a Veteran's surviving spouse may be eligible for several benefits provided by the VA in repayment for their service to our country.
Types of benefits and services
The VA provides services and benefits to Veterans, their spouses, the surviving spouses of deceased Veterans, and dependent children. Benefits can include financial assistance and services rendered by the VA, such as:
- Disability Benefits: Financial compensation to Veterans with service connected disabilities.
- VA Pension: A needs-based benefit for wartime Veterans who have limited or no income and are age 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled.
- Survivor's Pension A needs-based benefit paid to the surviving spouse or children of a deceased wartime Veteran.
- Aid and Attendance: An additional monetary benefit available to Veterans and surviving spouses who need assistance with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, and eating. It’s an enhancement to the regular VA pension or Survivors Pension.
- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC): A tax-free benefit for eligible survivors of service members who died in the line of duty or from a service-connected condition.
- Health Insurance through CHAMPVA: A comprehensive healthcare program in which the VA shares the cost of covered healthcare services and supplies with eligible beneficiaries.
Eligibility
Eligibility requirements vary between the different types of benefits and services and often require extensive documentation to prove eligibility to the VA. Eligibility is determined through several factors, to include:
- Military Service: Your client needs to have served honorably in the US Military, or be the spouse, surviving spouse, or dependent child of an eligible Veteran. Some benefits require additional Wartime Service in order to qualify.
- Medical Need: Proof of disability, often in connection with military service, or of a medical need for assistance or care.
- Financial Need: For many of these benefits, your client will need to demonstrate a financial need for assistance.
